Stimorol Gum Packaging

Stimorol Gum hosted a competition to redesign their new packaging. I decided to create something that was as fresh and full of flavour as the brand. Inspired by the textures and people of South Africa, my designs incorporate patterns from ShweShwe fabric design in an assortment of fun, eye-catching colours. South Africa is known as the rainbow nation, a melting pot of cultures, and so I thought it fitting to add caricatures of SA's funky people on SA's much loved gum. From the sexy red-head "cherry" you spotted in the club, to mister "original" afro-style, Mzanzi style is fun, dynamic and full of energy! My designs were awarded third place in the competition.

Durban: There's more going on than you think!

This incomplete artwork was created as a pitch to a newspaper client who reported on stories in and around my hometown of Durban. The concept that I came up with was that Durban is often overlooked as a sleepy little coastal town, but if you look more closely you will see that this is far from the truth. There are a lot of newsworthy stories just waiting to be uncovered.

The roads form the word DBN - which is the acronym for Durban. Unfortunately I never got to finish the piece which is sad because I had a whole bunch of other scenes waiting to to be drawn in. The Blue Light Brigade running cars off the road, corrupt politicians accepting bribes, illegal dumping in the ocean, Justin Bieber landing and being chased by crazed Beliebers... Hopefully one day I'll get to finish this.

A World of Deliciousness...

I created two illustrations recently for a company that makes all sorts of snacks, from popcorn to marshmallows to chips and crisps. I decided to play with the idea of how awesome it would be to live in a world made from all your favourite snacks… popcorn trees, marshmallow clouds, golden fields of cheesy poofs… The client requested the spaza shop and taxi rank locations though. I think I will definitely take this idea further one day and write and illustrate my own children’s book about such a wonderful place :) Yum!

Running Zebras

I designed this as a framed piece to hang on my wall at home, mainly because I needed something to tie in the colours in the space! A practical reason to create a piece of art. It consists of a pen-drawn illustration of running zebras scanned in and combined with a colourful digitally edited background.

Calm before the storm

I painted these two artworks (the old-school way, not digitally) quite a while back as entries into a children’s picture book competition. The story was about two rural African children and their small dog who are out gathering firewood and get caught in a thunderstorm.

Life is a beautiful struggle

Life is full of challenges that sometimes feel overwhelming, but no matter how hard it gets it is still worth waking up every day and appreciating the opportunity to witness the kindness of people and the beauty of the world around us. I designed this print with this thought in mind. I had wanted to try a typographic design for a while, and this simple message gave me the inspiration I needed.
